Bound by Lust recently underwent a makeover, as well as a sex change of sorts.

Originally featuring one lustily bound lady on the cover, the anthology now features a lusty lady and a lustily bound lad. (Who is that masked man?)

Although not an exclusively heterosexual book - my story in the collection is on the Sapphic side - I think the new cover is more alluring, for all of the reasons that editor Shanna Germain cites in her blog entry.

From cover to cover... Hurts So Good is sporting a new look, too. I'm partial to the original cover (guess I'm just whipped), but I won't make a fuss. I'm not the old bawl and chain.

Truth or dare.

And don't you dare pick truth.

Dare, you say? Good choice.

I dare you to read this snippet from "Dirty Mind Over Matter." Because the truth is, I think you might get a kick out of it.

…And that's how Gabe, who at present is sifting through a drawer in the His and His closet that is not his, swept me off my feet.

"You knock my socks off," I tell him.

"Your socks aren't the problem," Gabe returns, strolling toward a rack of cardboard cartons. "It's your shoes." He surveys the bevy of boxes. "Are you a centipede?" he ribs, inspecting the rows of rectangles. "You don't really need all of these, do you?" He reaches for one of the shoeboxes, snatches it off the rack.

My heart clobbers my ribs. I shove my palm against my chest, wrinkling my shirt. He flips the lid. Tennis shoes. He frowns, peeved.

I smile, relieved, and pluck the box out of his hands. "Look, why don't you go back and finish up in the living room? I think you've spent more than enough time in the closet, don’t you?" Gabe's brow scrunches like an accordion. "I just don't want your grubby little hands futzing with my footwear," I insist, grinning like a chimp. With an agitated sigh, I steer Gabe toward the door and propel him through the frame. "Now, shoo, spy, don't bother me."

He goes—for another box, a bigger box. I reach for his wrist but miss and now it's out of my hands. The top falls off and Gabe's mouth falls opens, stays slack, like a napkin dispenser, and he's processing, pondering, wondering what to make of his discovery.

"What have we here?" Gabe murmurs, fingering the contents. "Skeletons in the closet? Skeletons with sufficient meat on their bones, I see."

My head starts spinning like a pinwheel and I don't know what else to do except pray for my immoral soles. I've always stored my smut in shoeboxes, kept it hidden in plain sight. Each box contains magazines, rolled up like diplomas, and pictures, tucked like bookmarks between the pages of erotica anthologies. I figured, it's safe there, he'll never look there.

But he is looking there, right there, right here, right now. And I am experiencing the most mortifying moment of my entire life.

That was pretty painless, right? Well, for you it was. For our protagonist, not so much. He just has to remember that the fear of the dare is always much scarier than the dare itself. It's (dirty) mind over matter.

That's apparently what I've been doing for the past three months. Seriously, I have not updated this blog in three months? When I'm good, I'm very good, but when I'm bad... I'm very bad.

Um, I'm so busy? Normally, I stick a "t" in there by accident and turn "busy" into "busty." I'm not busty. But I am busy. However, I should never be too busy to update my blog.

On the sunny side, I come baring good news! The Slash Books anthology Truth or Dare, which features my foray into m/m erotica, called "Dirty Mind Over Matter," is now available as an e-book. I'm feeling a little nostalgic. Perhaps that's why I initially dated this entry 2010.

In addition to reminiscing, I've been doing a little pre-spring cleaning on my hard drive. I found an author interview I did for Fairy Tale Lust: Erotic Fantasies for Women, edited by Kristina Wright and featuring my story, "Mind Your Peas and Qs," which Kathleen Bradean at Erotica Revealed calls "deftly funny." (You'll have to scroll down some, but feel free to check out the review for Alison's Wonderland as well - I've got a tale in that collection, too.)

Although I much prefer T&A to Q&A, I decided to share the questionnaire I filled out:

What inspired you to retell this particular fairy tale?

Everyone's familiar with the concept of sleeping your way to the top, so I thought: what if someone could sleep their way to the bottom?

"Mind Your Peas and Qs" re-envisions the story of the princess and the pea. And what better tale to retell in the erotica genre than one in which mattresses feature prominently? In my version of the fairy tale, bachelors vie for the affections of a princess by proving their worth, their wealth, and their willingness to perform through the pleasure of pain.

How long have you been writing erotica?

I've been writing erotica for three years.

What is your writing routine like?

I'm not exactly a creature of habit when it comes to writing. At least not in the way I should be. The wheels are always turning, but the car is rarely in park. I spend way more time writing in my head than I do writing on paper. Oh, sure, my mental notes usually make their way into a spiral, but the truth is, if it weren't for deadlines, I'd probably be the most unprolific writer on the planet. It's funny, though, because I love to write – once I put caboose to chair and fingers to keyboard, that is. I think it's the perfectionist in me. Or maybe I'm just an incurable procrastinator.

Coming Together: By Hand is now available!

This farrago of self-love stories, edited by the magnificent Alessia Brio, includes my fiction piece, "Quite Contrary."

Here's what you're getting yourself into:

No candles.

Check.

She never understood how truncated wax could generate a romantic ambiance. And she is quite certain that her beige voile curtains, a wedding present from her mother-in-law, are not flame retardant. No music. Also check.

She cannot possibly expect to concentrate with the husky voice of a husky male crooning about desire and devotion. She will feel as though someone is in the bedroom with her, supervising, scrutinizing, salivating.

She crosses to the table displaying her china doll collection. Carefully, she rotates the stands, ensuring that the dolls' line of vision is obstructed by the paisley print pattern adorning the walls.

To further safeguard against voyeurs, she jiggles the doorknob to make sure it's locked. Though she has the house to herself, another resident could return at a moment's notice and neglect to announce his arrival.

Her eyes survey the room, pausing to inspect Chester, the hibiscus plant suspended near the window. Mentally reviewing her morning agenda, she recalls that at 9:05, shortly after breakfast, she tended to her companion. This comforts her, for she cannot have a dehydrated plant hanging over her head.

Satisfied that everything is in order, she approaches the bed, folds down the coverlet, and lowers herself onto the sheets, crisply ironed and boasting hospital corners.

She glances at the alarm clock. 10:10. She has several hours before she must begin getting ready for her surprise party, where she will be forced to smile and feign appreciation for a blouse she will want to exchange and a gift certificate for a beauty treatment she did not even know she needed.

In the interim, she will have a private party.

She has spent months pondering the commemoration of the five decades she has coexisted, however discordantly, with the rest of the human race.

And there is only one gift that will suffice.

She has a surfeit of degrees, framed and fastened to the walls of her office. She has an abundance of accolades, conferred upon her by colleagues who both envy and extol her novel analyses of English literature. She has a doting daughter, who is attending a nearby university and following in her mother's footsteps. She has a husband, too, but their relationship, while amicable, has been tempered by routine and familiarity, and he is more often her buddy than her lover. And, of course, she has Chester.

But what she doesn't have, what she's never had, is an orgasm.

You're invited.

"Not there," I muttered, pressing my palm against her pucker.

"Then where?" she asked when I pulled my hand away.

"Down there, that's where," I grumbled, inspecting the bright red, hibiscus-hued stain Rox had left on my skin. I rummaged through my lexicon of euphemisms, looking for something a little more adult. "On your lady parts..."

It's my turn to spank the day away.

In anticipation of the publication of D.L. King's Spank! anthology, I'll be sharing a snippet from my story.

The tale is told by an aspiring submissive, written in first person from a male point-of-view. In the three years that I've been writing erotic fiction, I've never "been" a man before. It's just always felt much more natural to write as a woman. But I wanted to explore the reasons why a guy would seek pleasure in pain, why a guy would have a preference for deference. Thus, "Fit to Be Tied, Bound to Be Gagged" was born.

"When I say bend over, you say how far."

It wasn't a command.

It wasn't a demand.

It wasn't even a reprimand.

It was a wisecrack, plain and simple, a riposte delivered in response to a mildly witty comment I'd made about my fiancée's promotion to station manager. But her remark had sparked my curiosity, let loose a slew of what ifs. 'What if she means it?' I wondered, sensing the beginnings of a smile. And then my pessimistic side kicked in – 'What if she doesn't?' – and the smile began to shrivel.

I spent the remainder of the day alternating between two of the seven deadly sins: lust and envy. I imagined myself reclining on our bed, a riding crop pinched like a rose between my teeth, waiting for Charlene to whale on my tail end. I thought of the imprints and handprints she would stamp on my flesh. I'd be seeing red, bold red, like the stripes in the American flag. And what could be more patriotic than a good old-fashioned spanking?

Charlene had awakened in me a dormant desire to be dominated. That woman never fails to amaze me – we hadn't even explored the fantasy yet and already she'd proven herself a power player in power playing...

[But] this had to be consensual, mutual, because even though I would be the one feeling pain, Charlene would be the one dealing pain, and she had to be okay with that.

"Are you okay with that?" I asked, my casual inflection no match for my tattered nerves as I sat in front of Charlene's desk while she stood behind it.

Charlene seemed to glory in my distress. "What exactly are you suggesting?" she queried, hoisting her hands onto her hips.

I tried hard not to revert to my squeaky pubescent voice as I said, "I'm suggesting that we take our work home with us."

I took in Charlene's expression – the tiny twinkle in her eyes, the giddy grin on her lips.

I could tell that she was up for it.

More than up for it.

Into it.

"It does seem logical, doesn't it?" Charlene replied, rubbing the rounded edges of her clipboard. "I'm already your superior at work. Why not also be your superior at play?"

Can anyone identify the sitcom from which I snagged my subject line?

I've got a new release!

My f/f romance, "Kiss and Makeup," is included in the anthology Passionate Hearts, released on September 1 by Vanilla Heart Publishing. Right now, the collection is available as an e-book, but a print release is planned for October 27.

Here's a synopsis of my story:

I hold in my hand an acceptance letter for Alessia Brio's collection Coming Together: By Hand!

My story in the anthology is called "Quite Contrary" and is my first published piece of erotic fiction. Back in the day (a.k.a. 2007), I decided to try my hand at writing literary erotica. So I wrote and submitted an earlier version of "Quite Contrary" to the 4th Birthday Fiction Competition hosted by For the Girls, and it earned an Honorable Mention.

The theme of this anthology is auto-erotica, so of course I have to share my favorite mentions of masturbation:

The other day, in the post office parking lot, there were two vans sitting side-by-side. One license plate read EXCITED and the other read NAUGHTY.

I hope that the following excerpt from "A Week and a Whip" will elicit both of those feelings in you.

To set the scene, our protagonist is with her girlfriends, venting and lamenting her boyfriend Jesse's wham-bam-when-will-this-be-over-ma'am approach to sex.

"You told me once that Jesse is the first guy you've dated who has no interest in, um, in pornography, right?"

It's true. Jesse isn't a sleaze, please type of guy. None of it stimulates him. Not if it's captured on celluloid, not if it's circulating in cyberspace. He flinches at the sight of women in the throes of faux ecstasy, winces at the plight of vixens immersed in violence, voyeurism, and vulgarity. Even Sapphic smut fails to whet Jesse's appetite. Soft-core or hardcore, it's all an eyesore to him.

"Maybe it's not disgust that he feels when he looks at those kinds of images. Maybe it's envy."

Envy.

Envy?

Envy!

Finally, a gem of advice amongst cubic zirconias.

"Perhaps he hasn't told you how he feels because he's worried you'll think he's depraved."

That's just like Jesse, worried I'll think he's depraved. He doesn't even curse in my presence, because he's afraid he'll offend my delicate sensibilities.

"You're a sex life saver," I gush, giving her a much-deserved squeeze and thank you.

Well, it looks like the old in-and-out has gotten old and is on its way out. I need to start thinking outside the box. To be more precise, I need to start thinking outside my box. (Hey, when I get horny, I get corny, what can I say?)

I love pink.

It's such a versatile color - fierce and feminine, innocent and impure.

Grease is my favorite musical, and every time I watch it, whether onscreen or onstage, I always imagine myself being invited to join the pack of Pink Ladies.

There's something so alluring about that catty coterie. They're similar yet unique, conceited yet self-conscious, flirty and dirty and fun and way too cool for school. And don't even get me started on those cotton candy pink satin jackets that are their trademark. Can we say "covet"?

Alas, I am pretty in - but too pure to be - pink.

Unless, of course, the fact that I write erotica somehow negates the whole pure thing... but I'm not entirely convinced that it does.

I am positively mad about mad libs.

It's an enduring love affair, ongoing since junior high, when an English teacher used them to help her students understand the parts of speech.

The other night, I was doing one with a friend and when she requested a noun, I offered up the word dominatrix. So, at the end, when all the blanks were filled in, she read the first sentence and we discovered that in the 1800's, two brothers invented the world's first "electric dominatrix."

That kept us in stitches for a good five minutes.

Last week, I made an announcement about making an announcement about a project promoting marriage equality. I will now announce the announcement that I announced I'd be announcing.

(Sheesh. I got tongue-tied just typing that.)

I am a member of a coterie of authors who write lesbian literature. The collective, Sapphic Planet, has partnered with loveyoudivine Alterotica to create an anthology entitled To Love and To Cherish: An Anthology of Lesbian Love and Marriage.

Stories in the collection, edited by Beth Wylde and Lara Zielinsky, will be divided into three e-books: On Bended Knee, With This Ring, and Lives and Wives.

My contribution, "The Felicity of Domesticity," about two girls who decide to jump the broom at the ripe old age of six, will appear in the first e-book, On Bended Knee, scheduled for release on January 29.

Subsequent release dates are February 5 and February 12.

Then, on Valentine's Day, February 14, the collection will be released in its entirety as a print book.

All royalties from the anthology, in its many forms, will benefit Marriage Equality.

I am delighted to be a part of this project. It's my quiet way of being an activist for the LGBT community.

Reading Material Girl

This year, I'm keeping the resolutions simple - reasonable, realistic, attainable.

1) Read more. I am a very sporadic reader. I write more than I read, which is counterintuitive, considering that writing is for reading. I've got books, scads of them, that sit on shelves, un-devoured, just yearning to have their spines creased and their pages turned and their words imbibed.

2) Procrastinate less. Why do today what can be put off till tomorrow? Well, what's wrong with the here and now? If I start on a story in advance of the deadline, even just a week in advance, I can work on the piece in small doses, with plenty of time for tweaking and tinkering. The longer I wait, the less time I have for revisions. And while I do work well under pressure, that doesn't mean I can't be creative when I'm calm.

3) Socialize more. You know that book The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky? As a writer, there are definitely perks to wallflowerdom, but I shouldn't use my profession as an excuse to stay introverted and undetected. I would prefer to be just as adept at talking as I am at typing, but parity in that department is still a bit of a stretch, so this year, I'm going to try for a balance of 60 (typing) /40 (talking).

Are you gaga for GaGa?

Up until a few days ago, I had never heard the euphemism "disco stick."

But then I was on YouTube, the abyss of addicktion. Er, addiction. Yeah. I was watching Benson/Stabler fanvids, because I 'ship them - it's all about the chemistry, and theirs is akin to a bowl of Rice Krispies - snap, crackle, pop.

So while I'm searching, I stumble upon this wonder:

Speaking of wonders, it's a wonder I was able to interpret the meaning of "disco stick" without any outside help. Several years ago, I enlisted the assistance of a close friend because I hadn't the foggiest idea how to (re)define "milkshake."

The Joans is my new favorite band.

The group is made up of men who are paying homage to Joan Crawford through music.

I'm a fan of Joan Crawford, too... and I'm also a fan of the movie Mommie Dearest.

I've never read the book it's based on - you can find it at your local bookstore in what Sophia Petrillo calls "The Bitter Children of Celebrities" section - but the film is such a guilty pleasure. It simultaneously takes itself too seriously and doesn't take itself seriously at all. I appreciate the picture for the camp factor, the kitschy nostalgia aspect, the queer quirkiness (or is it quirky queerness?) of it all.

Gawd, I love this song - "Mad at the Dirt" - inspired by the movie and Joan's (alleged) wire hanger hang-up.

Did everyone have a terrific T-Day? Now comes the advent of Christmas crooners. Yep, folks, Rudolph's back on the radio. I'll admit, I have a few favorite holiday ditties - "Sleigh Ride," "Santa Baby," "My Christmas Wish" - but I much prefer nondenominational fare.

As you may or may not know, I'm a big fan of Laverne & Shirley and, as such, have always had a burning yearning to wear my first initial on my chest.

So the other day, when I happened upon a jar of monogrammed buttons in a quaint little shop in town, I just had to have one. As I fished out a button with a pink cursive "A" stitched to a black background, I could not wait to get pinned.

My button was made by a company called Two's Company, but there are many lovely letters out there. These, for instance, are pretty cute.

On another note, many moons ago, I came upon a Laverne & Shirley shirt on eBay that had the words "Lesbians Are Hot" printed below their picture. Why oh why did I not snatch that baby up when I had the chance?

Has anyone else seen that shirt? Does anyone else have that shirt? Does anyone who has that shirt have the desire to let someone else have that shirt?

I caught Violet Blue's interview with Oprah yesterday. Violet was delightful and insightful and spoke very eloquently on the distinction between pornography and erotica. I love that she described erotica as having layers, how it's both visceral and cerebral. I just wish that the episode had addressed literary erotica in addition to cinematic erotica.

"Flick Chicks" tells the tale of two lovers who make films, period pieces, that are geared to the nostalgically-inclined. The flicks the chicks create are inspired by the stag films of the 50s that featured the 3 B's: bondage, backsides, and Bettie Page... as well as the occasional piece of equestrian equipment...

Check out this collage of notes I designed while crafting the story.

I'm a very visual person, and the images combined with the words really brought the story to fruition on the page.

Got news on the anthology front! My short story, "Mind Your Peas and Qs," will be included in the forthcoming collection, Fairy Tale Lust: Erotic Fantasies for Women. This anthology is edited by Kristina Wright and will be published by Cleis Press in the spring of 2010.

My contribution re-envisions the story of the princess and the pea. In "Mind Your Peas and Qs," bachelors vie for the affections of a princess by proving their worth, their wealth, and their willingness to perform through the pleasure of pain.

In order to prove that he is a loyal royal, a man must be able to feel a pea wedged beneath a heap of 20 mattresses. The princess and the candidate will engage in fornication every night for three weeks. With each passing day, one mattress will be removed from the pile-high pyramid, diminishing the distance between the prince and the pea, bringing him closer and closer to the source of his suffering.

Will he be able to, um, keep up the good work and keep the princess happy?

Will he succeed in sleeping his way to the bottom?

I adore Halloween - chomping on candy corn, scooping the goop out of plump round pumpkins, and, of course, playing dress-up.

Being yourself is way overrated. Be whoever you darn well want to be.

I usually dress up as Like a Virgin-esque Madonna. I've also been Laverne DeFazio ('cause she's one L of a dame), a bumblebee, and a chocolate sandwich cookie.

But what I haven't been, what I really should be, is Alice in Wonderland. I think I'd look pretty fetching in that blue and white frock you see before you. Actually, that's one of the tamest Alice outfits I've come across.

Next year, perhaps. Perhaps next year I will discover, as the lyrics to Raven-Symoné's "Alice" profess, just how deep the rabbit hole goes.

Ohhh, Suzannah...

So now that I, a feminist, have completely objectified the feminists on a feminist's show -- and have completely overused the word "feminist" -- I'd like to discuss Designing Women for a bit.

I totally love this sitcom, not because of the, um, eye candy factor, but because it hardly even feels like a sitcom. In addition to the sultry Sapphic subtext between Mary Jo and Suzanne, the series addresses and debunks practically every kind of prejudice in existence: sexism, misogyny, homophobia, racism, classism, ageism, sizeism. You name it, they've got it covered.

Character breakdown...

Mary Jo. Mary Jo could be my doppelganger. (I've always wanted to use that word.) She's much more assertive and "brimming with bravado and self-confidence" than she realizes, and if I weren't so humble, I'd say the same thing about myself.

Julia. My heroine. Joan Crawford reincarnated, The Terminator is the epitome of eloquence and elegance. Julia says everything out loud that I have only ever had the gumption to say in writing. When in doubt of what to do about some grievous injustice, I often ask myself, WWJD? What would Julia do?

Charlene. My dream girl. If I knew Charlene in real life, I absolutely would have fallen for her the way that Dorothy's friend Jean falls for Rose in the "Isn't It Romantic?" episode of The Golden Girls.

Suzanne. The Rolls Royce of females, according to Mary Jo, who considers it an honor just to guard her brassiere at night. As irreverent as Suzanne is, I admire her absence of inhibitions. Suzanne says whatever she wants about whomever she wants to whomever she wants whenever she wants. Yes, that description applies to Julia as well, but unlike Julia, Suzanne doesn't think before she speaks. There's just something very liberating about that, y'know?

Speaking of Suzanne, I had a rather erotic dream about her last night. My recollection is fuzzy in terms of storyline, but the, um, sensual aspects of the dream are much more lucid.

Hmmm. I think I would describe the dream as a fusion of my story "Bowl Me Over" and my poem "Sugar High"...

Coming Together is coming together with other green bloggers to participate in Blog Action Day 2009.

This year's topic is climate change. As a person prone to paranoia, climate change gives me the creeps. That being said, although I am positively rabid about recycling (I can be an ogre when it comes to the three R's), I'm something of a passive activist -- I sign online petitions, I click daily over at The Rainforest Site, I donate my writing to anthologies such as Coming Together: Al Fresco, all proceeds from which benefit Conservation International.

The Cat's Meow

I was just updating my author bios.

The second version first proclaimed, "Her non-sexual preferences consist of commas, carnivals, and cotton candy."

The second version now proclaims, "Allison's indulgences include cotton candy, kitten heels, and Old Hollywood glamour."

So, what's the back story?

Well, I kind of like to think of myself as a connoisseur of cotton candy and couldn't bear to omit that.

I love kitten heels because I totter in too-high heels, especially slender stilettos, so the kitten style offers comfort, cuteness, and a skosh of sex appeal. They are, quite simply, the cat's meow.

As for Old Hollywood glamour, it's all demure and all allure. I adore a classic look - chic and chaste and charming, like in this photo of glamour goddess Jean Harlow.

Wasn't she a stunner?

I recently found a fan letter that I'd written to an actress performing in a Broadway musical. I'd seen the show, but didn't have time to stick around for an autograph. So, I wrote a letter, sent it to the theatre (along with an 8 X 10 photo and a SASE - I'm big on base-covering), and received the picture back signed one week later.

In my letter, dated April 17, 2007, I wrote:

...I might one day be über - or semi - famous. But not in the ritzy glitzy glam paparazzi princess sense. Nope, I plan to be counted among the cliterary elite. I mean... among the literary elite...

I composed this letter before I'd even heard of something called erotica. I would not write my first piece of erotic fiction, nor would I even contemplate entering the erotica orbit, until three months later. Now, I realize three months isn't much, but at the time, I was wholly absorbed in the present - exams, assignments, senior project, cap and gown - and hadn't really gotten into the specifics of my post-collegian existence.

Who knew I had psychic proclivities?
